efd-bannerEducation Freedom Day is a worldwide celebration of Free Software used in Education and Free Educational Resources. Launched in 2013 with its first celebration in 2014 by the same organization behind Software Freedom Day. It aims at educating the worldwide public and educators about the benefits of making and sharing free knowledge and the tools already in place to achieve that objective. It also provides an international day to serve as a platform to raise awareness to existing projects and communities around the world as well as encourage participation in local developments.

We have envisioned Education Freedom Day as a day to bring the many free educational resources in the spotlight to influence the teaching body and demonstrate methodologies already in place or ready to be implemented. It is the opportunity to highlight initiatives in place nearby or deployed within a similar framework, so our local educational group can quickly get up to speed and consider using a similar approach.

Education Freedom Day will be hosted annually starting this Saturday January 18th, 2014 and kept on the third Saturday of January. Being somewhat in the middle of year it should give plenty of opportunities to either access the status of current deployments or plan for the upcoming educational year projects. We specially hope that a lot of the current efforts will get more popular within the teaching arena and that creating Free Educational Resources in general will become clearer for teachers.
